Here's a Story of Washer, Dryer, and an Ill-Equipped Laundry Room

When Cam and I got married we lived in an apartment complex in Mesa, AZ. We had a cute one-bedroom apartment. We didn't have our own laundry room, so each Saturday I would drag all our dirty laundry over to one of the complex's community laundry rooms. What a pain, right? Yea, it kind of was, but doing laundry this way had a couple of advantages-- I was able to get all the laundry done all at once. In those days that didn't mean much since it was only the two of us. We did only 2-4 loads per week. Each load got a separate machine, so that meant laundry was washed, dried, folded, and put away within about an hour and a half each laundry day.

These days, that sounds like a dream come true! Now I'm the proud owner of four messy children (boys) I think laundry is eternal in our house.

Hmmm... maybe I could put that as a vinyl lettering quote in my laundry room. "Laundry is Eternal." I've become somewhat addicted to vinyl lettering, you know? I fear I may have crossed the line in what's an acceptable amount of quotes/words that decorate the walls in my home. If I haven't crossed the line, I'm walking the line like a tight-rope.

But, I digress... Back to my little trip down memory lane...

When we moved from the apartment, we moved into a cute, little two-bedroom apartment in Provo, and guess what-- we had washer and dryer hook-ups!! Guess where they were-- in the kitchen! But who cares, we could do our laundry in our very own home!

My Grandma Winnie was sweet enough to give us her washer and dryer. She said she needed a new set anyway. (She really didn't.)

We were thrilled!! So thrilled!

Fast forward a little...

We've had to put some work into that washer and dryer. Nothing major, but I'm lucky Cameron's a handy fix-it man who knows how to order random washer parts off the Internet when they can't be found at Sears, so we can keep a couple of our major appliances running a little longer.

P.S. They're 19 years old. Purchased on January 15, 1991, from Sears, by my Grandpa. It's true. I have the receipt. He paid a total of $764.00 for the set.

We'll my trusty washer and dryer still work pretty well. The washer's main knob broke off a couple of years ago, but with my superior intellect and homemaking skills, I haven't let that stop me from doing the laundry!

Fast forward a little more...

We've lived in this house four years now. We have a very small laundry room. It pretty much only has room for the washer and dryer. Our "amazing" builder did have the foresight to build a very high-tech wooden shelf above the washer/dryer area, but that was the extent of the storage and organization.

Over time, I gave up on trying to make that room a workable space. I just did my laundry and got out of there as fast as I could. I've grown to hate that room. It's become a dumping ground at times. It's ugly, unorganized, dirty. It's like the red-headed stepchild of the family. (We ignore it and wish it looked better!)

Well, guess what! This is all going to change! In fact, it's already begun to change! I (Yes, you heard me right...) I moved the washer and dryer out of the laundry room yesterday (and all the junk), I tore out the shelf, and we painted the room a lovely olive green. Tomorrow, we're going to build a platform for these babies

How stinkin' exciting, huh?

I've got big plans for my little laundry room that include, cupboards, shelves, and a rod to hang clothes on. It's going to be magnificent, or at least significantly better than the above pictures.

We got a call this afternoon saying that The washer and dryer that were supposed to be delivered on Tuesday, are now on back order and won't be delivered until the end of the month. Shoot! I guess we'll have more time to remodel the room and we'll have to use our old set a little longer.

I am SO UBER jealous! I haven't has a real laundry room since we lived in the condos over there, now I have to haul our mountains of clothes into the dark, cold, stinky garage, bleh! It's true laundry grows exponentially with each child! How exciting to be getting such a great new space!

You must post an 'after'!

I think ANYTHING that makes laundry a more enjoyable task is a worthy investment. Maybe, if it helps, you ought to throw some vinyl letters over that new coat of olive green paint.

Because really. Laundry IS eternal!

Who would've thought that one day you would be excited to get a washer and dryer? Remember the days when it was new clothes that excited us? I got new measuring cups and couldn't wait to get home and use them. Oh the things that bring us happiness.

I agree with Emily, you have to post after pictures. I guess I can wait and see it in April if I have to.
